Aquatic Weed Control

Aquatic weed control treatments on Guntersville and Nickajack reservoirs were completed in September 2009 in accordance with a transition plan. TVA will begin aquatic weed herbicide treatments in public areas on TVA reservoirs in early June 2010. As previously announced, treatments in public areas will be applied as needed. Treatments in private residential areas and around commercial facilities will be the responsibility of shoreline property owners. TVA will continue to use mechanical equipment to open and maintain boating access lanes into embayments and to public facilities such as ramps.

The weekly herbicide treatment schedule for 2010 will be available on the TVA website or can be obtained by calling TVA’s Environmental Information Center at (800) 882-5263. All herbicide treatments in public areas will be applied in accordance with state regulations and following the guidelines in aquatic plant management plans developed by reservoir stakeholder groups and defined by several years of plan implementation.

TVA will continue to provide technical assistance such as: plant identification, optimum times to treat within the seasonal growth cycle, state requirements for herbicide applications, and information on hand held equipment for use by shoreline property owners. TVA also will provide support to stakeholder groups having interest in the development of reservoir-specific environmentally sound plans for treating aquatic weeds. For additional information call the TVA Environmental Information Center at (800) 882-5263.
